Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of communication experienced by nursing students during clinical practice in an attempt to explore how to demonstrate communicative competency in a more effective way during clinical practice.

Methods : This is a qualitative study to have focus group interviews with 15 nursing students who were in their third and fourth years, and Colaizzi¡¯s phenomenological method was applied.

Results : There were four theme clusters, 14 themes and 32 meanings. The four theme clusters were ¡°one-sided communication¡±, ¡°frustrated communication¡±, ¡°getting to teach oneself¡± and ¡°building relationships¡±.

Conclusion : The findings of the study are expected to provide some information on the development of intervention methods geared toward improving the communication of nursing students in the future.
